You bought a new iPhone and want to keep using your Apple Watch. Logical, as the Apple Watch is indispensable for many people. But how do you pair your existing Apple Watch with your new iPhone, without losing data? In this article, we explain how.

Make a backup

The most important thing when pairing an Apple Watch with a new iPhone is making a backup. Have your old iPhone handy and back up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes. Make sure iCloud sync for Health is on via Settings > your name > iCloud > Health. If you use iTunes, you'll need to encrypt your backup, you do this by entering a password.

Pair the Apple Watch with your new iPhone

Once you have made a backup, you can pair the Apple Watch with your new iPhone. Here are the steps to take:

  1. Make sure you have both devices handy and that they are charged.
  2. Hold the old iPhone and the Apple Watch together and open the Apple Watch app on the old iPhone.
  3. Tap "My Watch" and then "Delete Apple Watch".
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the Apple Watch by tapping "Delete".
  5. Turn off and restart the Apple Watch by holding the side button for a long time until the Apple logo appears.
  6. Open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone.
  7. Tap "Start" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Select "Restore from backup" if you have backed up the old iPhone.
  9. Select your backup and follow the steps on the screen.

If you have already set up your new iPhone before pairing the Apple Watch, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your new iPhone.
  2. Tap "My Watch" and then "Delete Apple Watch".
  3. Confirm that you want to delete the Apple Watch by tapping "Delete".
  4. Apple Watch pairing with a new iPhone:

    Once the backup of your old iPhone is complete, proceed to the next step. Connect your Apple Watch to the charging station and make sure the device is fully charged. Next, go to the Settings app on your new iPhone and tap "Bluetooth." Then search for your Apple Watch in the list of available devices and select it.
