MacBook keyboard replacement
Is your MacBook suddenly typing double letters, or does the space bar stick? Usually it's not your whole laptop that's the problem, but a single mechanism under the keys. At FIXNOW in Antwerp and Wolvertem, we replace MacBook keyboards, from the older butterfly generation to the newest Air and Pro with M-chip.
We start with a diagnosis and let you know where you stand before we begin. Your files stay right where they are: a keyboard replacement doesn't touch your storage.

Check for yourself
- A key doesn't respond, no matter how hard you press
- You type one letter and two or three appear
- A key sticks or only comes back up after a second push
- One key clearly needs more pressure than the rest
- A keycap is loose or missing
A loose keycap seems harmless, but don't wait too long. Without a keycap, the mechanism is exposed and dust and crumbs get in easily. Not sure? Stop by in Antwerp or Wolvertem, and we'll test every key and tell you honestly whether a replacement is needed.
What causes a keyboard to break?
Three causes keep coming up in the workshop: moisture, dirt and wear. Moisture is the biggest culprit: a spilled glass runs between the keys down to the contacts underneath. Dirt is second, a bread crumb under a key is enough to block the mechanism. And frequently used keys like the space bar simply wear out after years of typing.
The build year of your MacBook makes a big difference here. Models from 2016 to 2019 have a butterfly keyboard, and that design is very sensitive to dust. Cleaning often helps only briefly; the issue comes back because the mechanism itself is fragile. For that generation, we usually recommend a full replacement rather than repeated cleaning. Later models have a scissor mechanism that noticeably holds up longer, although moisture remains just as damaging there.
How we work
Testing each key individually
We check underneath the problem keys to see exactly what's going on. If it's just dirt under one key, sometimes a cleaning or a single new mechanism is enough.
Replacing the keyboard or top case
On most MacBooks, the keyboard is riveted into the top case, the upper housing. Depending on the model, we replace the keyboard separately or fit a complete top case.
Retesting everything
We retest every key, the keyboard backlight and the function keys, and on models with a Touch Bar, that strip as well.
Where possible, we fit an original Apple part. For some older models we use a high-quality alternative that meets the same quality standards; we'll explain the options for your model beforehand. Prefer QWERTY instead of the Belgian AZERTY, or the other way around? Let us know when you drop it off, and we'll order the right version.
Water or coffee on your keyboard?
Do this right away
- Turn your MacBook off immediately and unplug the charger
- Bring the device in as soon as possible
- Don't let it dry on a radiator
- Don't put it in rice: that only delays the problem while the moisture inside causes corrosion
With water damage, we deliberately don't promise anything upfront. We open the device, see how far the moisture has spread, and then tell you what's achievable. Sometimes the keyboard is the only casualty and a replacement is enough. If the moisture has reached the logic board, you'll hear that first, before we replace anything at all.
Keeping your keyboard in good shape for longer
The biggest win comes from a single habit: keep drinks away from your laptop. By far most of the keyboards we replace were done in by a spilled glass or cup. Eating at your desk? Just close the MacBook for a moment.
Blow away dust carefully with compressed air: keep the can upright and spray at an angle along the keys. If you carry your MacBook daily, use a sturdy sleeve and don't leave loose items between the screen and keyboard. Notice a key getting stiffer? Come in before it seizes up completely. The sooner we see it, the smaller the fix.
Your model, your price
You'll find us in Antwerp and Wolvertem; we handle many repairs while you wait, though we schedule a bit more time for a keyboard replacement. Live further away? You can also mail in your MacBook. Choose your model above: you'll find the fixed price there, along with the warranty period.
