Not much preparation is needed. If possible, make a backup via iCloud or your computer. If your device has been in water, turn it off immediately and come as soon as possible. Also with a swollen battery, it's better to wait: come directly to the store, that's safer for you and your device.

With regular repair, such as screen or battery replacement, your data normally stays on the device; we work according to strict privacy guidelines. One exception: with a lock reset (forgotten access code), the data is lost due to Apple security, unless you have an iCloud backup. Making a backup before repair is anyway a good habit.
