Why has Face ID stopped working?

Face ID rarely stops working for no reason. The cause is often a drop, a knock, or moisture near the top edge of the screen, where the TrueDepth camera sensors sit. Face ID can also act up after a screen swap done elsewhere, if those sensors weren't put back carefully.
