Is your iPhone showing no sign of life at all? It won't turn on, even after charging for a long time? That's an annoying problem, but often still fixable. At FIXNOW in Antwerp we specialize in diagnosing and repairing iPhones that won't start up.

An iPhone that won't start up causes stress: you can no longer access your contacts, photos and apps. The causes vary — from a worn battery or corrupted software to a defective charging port or logic board damage. The device may seem completely dead, while in many cases it can still be repaired: quite a few iPhones that come in "dead" get up and running again in our workshop.

That's why in Antwerp we never just start replacing parts: first a thorough diagnosis, then a transparent quote. This way you know where you stand in advance — no surprises afterwards.

First aid — what you can try yourself

Before concluding that your iPhone is permanently broken, you can try these steps:

  • Charge it thoroughly. Use an original Apple charger and cable (or an MFi-certified one) and let the device charge undisturbed for at least 30 to 60 minutes. A deeply discharged battery sometimes needs a bit of time before it responds.
  • Force a restart (hard reset). Even with a black screen, this can break through a software freeze. The method differs per model:
  • iPhone 8 or later: briefly press volume up, briefly press volume down and then hold down the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: hold down the side button and volume down together until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 6s or older: hold down the home button and the side button (or the top button) together until the Apple logo appears.
  • Try a different cable or charger. This rules out the problem being with the charging accessories. Also check whether the charging port is clean.
  • Connect to a computer. If your iPhone is recognized in iTunes or Finder (possibly in recovery or DFU mode), a software repair may be an option.

If none of these steps help, it's time for professional assistance. Don't try to open the device yourself if you have no experience with that.

Possible causes and our solution in Antwerp

If your iPhone won't start up, the problem usually lies in one of these five areas:

  • Defective battery. A battery at the end of its lifespan or with an internal defect. We test the battery and replace it professionally — see iPhone battery replacement.
  • Software issues. A failed iOS update, a jailbreak gone wrong or corrupted system files. We try to repair the software, possibly via DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) — a special mode that restores the firmware even when iOS no longer loads. Note: a DFU restore erases all data and is therefore used as a last resort; data recovery is not possible in every case.
  • Defective charging port. If the charging port is damaged, the battery no longer charges and the iPhone eventually stops turning on. We repair or replace the charging port module.
  • Logic board issues. Often the most complex cause: damage from a drop, water damage or a defective component such as the power management IC. We carry out specialized logic board diagnostics and repairs.
  • Defective screen. Technically the iPhone does start up, but a screen that shows no image gives the impression that the device is dead. We diagnose the difference and replace defective screens.

Frequently asked questions

My iPhone won't turn on — can I just walk in in Antwerp?

You can, but booking an appointment online locks in your time slot and lets us start the diagnosis right when you arrive. The opening hours of the store in Antwerp are available on the location page.

How quickly will I know if my iPhone can still be repaired?

That depends on the cause. An iPhone that won't start up due to a worn battery is fixed faster than a device with logic board damage, which requires an in-depth analysis. After the diagnosis you immediately get a quote; for every repair we aim for a smooth turnaround time.

Will my data be kept during the repair?

With hardware repairs such as a battery or screen replacement, your data is normally preserved. One exception: if the software needs to be restored via DFU mode, all data is erased — we discuss this with you in advance, and we also advise you on the possibilities for data recovery.
